Juan Bautista Gill
Juan Bautista Gill y García del Barrio (born October 28, 1840 in Asunción ; † April 12, 1877 ibid) was a Paraguayan politician who was President of Paraguay between 1874 and 1877 .
Life
Gill became Minister of Finance (Ministro de Hacienda) in 1870 and held this office until 1871. He then became President of the Senate in 1872 (Cámara de Senadores) . On November 25, 1874, after the resignation of Salvador Jovellanos , he took over the office of President of Paraguay . During his tenure in 1876 he managed to contractually determine the withdrawal of the troops of Argentina and the Empire of Brazil , which had occupied Paraguay since the end of the Triple Alliance War in 1870. On April 12, 1877 he was killed in an uprising, whereupon the previous Vice President Higinio Uriartethe successor took office by virtue of office. During Gill's presidency, former President Facundo Machaín served as Foreign Minister and later President Bernardino Caballero as Minister of Justice, Religion and Public Education.
