Luis Coloma Roldán , known as Father Coloma (born January 9, 1851 in Jerez de la Frontera . † June 11, 1915 in Madrid ) was a Spanish writer .

Life

Luis Coloma attended naval school at the age of 12 and later studied law at the University of Seville . Under the influence of his friend, the Spanish author Fernán Caballero , whose interest in didactic fairy tales he shared, he turned to writing and worked for various newspapers. He first led the life of a bon vivant before becoming a Jesuit in 1874 after recovering from an almost fatal gunshot wound . In 1908 he was accepted into the Real Academia Española .

Coloma became known through the sensational novel Pequeñeces , first published in a religious paper, Mensajero del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus , in which he portrayed the frivolous, all too often vicious lifestyle of the Madrid aristocracy and plutocracy before the Restoration in 1874 with powerful irony scourged. The work had many editions and was translated into almost all European languages. Likewise a trend novel is Por un piojo (4th edition 1894). Before that, the militant, eloquent priest had published a large number of stories and sketches based on nature, including Pilatillo (1886), La Gorriona (1897) and Juan Miseria . He also wrote stories for children under the title Cuentos para niños (2nd edition 1889; German children's book , Berlin 1897). Ratón Pérez (meaning "Ratón the mouse") is a contemporary fable with social implications that was related to King Alfonso XIII. was written when he was still a child. In the Retrados de antoño (Madrid 1895) Coloma offers biographical studies of thinkers and poets of the 18th century.
