Ester Adaberto , birth name Ester Nunez de Arce (* 1872 in Naples , Italy , † 1951 in Milan , Italy) was a Spanish- Italian opera singer with a soprano voice .

Life

Ester Adaberto was born in Naples in 1872. Her father was Spanish, her mother Italian. At the age of two, she moved to Milan with her family. She studied singing with Emma Dotti. After taking part in several recitals in Milan, she made her debut in 1897 at the Mirandola Theater in Pagliacci . From 1897 to 1900 she sang roles like Mimi in La Bohème , Gilda in Rigoletto , Aida and Nedda in Pagliacci at theaters in various Italian cities such as Messina, Pavia, Novara and Turin . In 1901 she went to Russia with the Castellano Opera Company, where she first sang in Minsk, Kiev, Odessa and Kharkiv , and in 1902 in Ekaterinoslaw , Saint Petersburg , Rostov and Vilnius . After another year in Russia, she returned to Italy in 1904.

In 1905 she went to the United States . She had engagements with the San Carlo Opera Company and the Lambardi Opera Company. In 1906 she sang in Los Angeles and San Francisco. She sang with success for a number of years, although she turned out to be a difficult character and unreliable. So she often refused to sing for no reason and thus caused difficulties for the concert organizers. She often sang in vaudeville theaters and other even less prestigious places during these years. In spite of her escapades, she sang Leonora in Il trovatore at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1909 . In 1910 and 1911 she was in Europe and also sang in Cairo, Alexandria and Constantinople. After a trip to Cuba in February 1912, she sang again in the United States until 1915. After her son fell in World War I, she retired from the opera stage in 1917. She sang the great soprano parts of the operas played in her time. She often sang the Aida, but the title roles of Tosca and Carmen were also part of her repertoire of around thirty operas.
