When the Elbe Lateral Canal was built in 1968–1976, a so-called economy sluice was built near the village of Esterholz in order to overcome a height difference of 23 meters. This was supplemented by a second lock. After eight years of construction, the new Uelzen II lock was released on December 8, 2006 . The federal government invested 122 million euros in the new lock. The centerpiece is the new lock chamber with a usable length of 190 meters and a width of 12.50 meters. It was built as a so-called savings lock with a total of eight savings basins, which are arranged on both sides of the lock chamber on four levels one above the other.
