Esther Mahlangu [ maˈɬaŋɡu ] (born November 11, 1935 in Middelburg , Transvaal ) is a South African painter of the Ndebele ethnic group .

life and work

Esther Mahlangu is one of the Ndebele people, she speaks South Ndebele (isiNdebele or Nrebele). At the age of ten she started painting murals under the guidance of her mother and grandmother. In the tradition of their people it is the women who paint the facades of the houses. Your painting tool is chicken feathers. In the past there were round huts in South Ndebele (in South Africa) and square houses in North Ndebele (in Zimbabwe ), today both types of houses are found in both settlement areas. In the museum village Botshabelo , the culture of the Ndebele is cultivated and conveyed to visitors. “Painting is in my heart and in my blood,” says the artist.

Mahlangu was the first Ndebele artist to paint traditional geometric patterns on canvas, bringing her people's art to the Western art market. In Europe her work was a. a. shown at the Center Pompidou in Paris and the British Museum in London. Her art collectors include John Legend , Swizz Beatz , Usher and Oprah Winfrey .
