Middelburg is a city in the South African province of Mpumalanga . It is located in Steve Tshwete Parish in Nkangala District .

geography

In 2011 Middelburg had 87,348 inhabitants. Middelburg is the administrative seat of the district and the municipality. The former townships are Mhluzi, Nasareth and Eastdene. The city lies on the Klein Olifants River , a tributary of the Lepelle . The town of eMalahleni , where there is coal mining, is around 25 kilometers to the west .

history

Middelburg was founded in 1864 by Voortrekkern in the area of ​​the Sterkfontein farm as Nasareth , in German: Root of the dry land. In 1872 the name was changed to Middelburg (German: Mittelburg) to describe the location between Pretoria and the gold mining town of Lydenburg (today: Mashishing). In 1890 a Dutch reformed church was built, called Witkerk . During the Second Boer War , British troops set up a concentration camp in the city . 1381 Boer women and children died here. The Memorial Museum was built next to their graves .

The Columbus Stainless steel mill attracted large numbers of workers from the United Kingdom and other European countries in the 1950s to 1970s . Until the end of apartheid, Mhluzi was reserved for blacks, Nasareth for the Colored and Eastdene for people of Indian origin.

Economy and Transport

The largest company is Columbus Stainless. The coal required for steel production is obtained from eMalahleni. In addition, numerous agricultural products are grown around Middelburg.

There is a public and a private hospital in Middelburg.

The N4 , which is part of the Trans-Kalahari Highway , runs a little south of Middelburg in a west-east direction . The N11 runs in a north-south direction through Middelburg and crosses the N4 southwest of the city. Middelburg is on the Pretoria – Maputo railway line , which is also used for passenger transport. The regional airport has the ICAO code FAMB.
