Speech and arts

Since the establishment of the Estia Pieridon Mouson, the group has been involved in the planning and implementation of exhibitions by local and foreign artists. It organized the "Celebrations of the Muses", the forerunner of the Olympos Festival. In 1990, an exhibition of traditional Chinese art was organized in cooperation with the Ambassador of China, the Delphi Cultural Center and Pieria Prefecture. In the following years exhibitions were held on the subjects of archeology, history and culture. In 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2009 conferences were held on the subject of "Pieria in Byzantine and post-Byzantine times". Helpers and participants included the Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, and the 9th Eforia for Byzantine Antiquities.

The group has published three books on the subject of "Pieria in Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Times" (1997, 2002 and 2008), a fourth work has been completed and is currently in print (June 2018).

In the meantime 41 festivals have been organized and carried out responsibly. More than 15,000 dancers, singers and their companions from 30 countries were looked after by the association.

Folk dance

Part of a traditional costume (handicraft)

A folk dance group was founded in 1969, and today it includes around 150 active dancers, musicians and dance teachers. The club has around 200 traditional costumes from all over Greece for performances. Traditional local dances and dances from all over Greece are danced. Separate premises were rented for the activities of the division. Thousands of children, adolescents and adults have now been taught. The children's education begins from the age of 10; they not only learn the appropriate movements, but are also informed about the history of the dances. The dancers learn about traditional Greek musical instruments; they are instructed about their structure and handling.

In addition to domestic appearances, the dance group performed abroad as early as 1970. Some of the countries visited so far:

  • Belgium
  • China
  • Germany
  • Estonia
  • France
  • Holland
  • Italy
  • Yugoslavia
  • Canada
  • Luxembourg
  • Austria
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Switzerland
  • Spain
  • Czech Republic
  • Hungary
  • Cyprus

theatre

The group "Pierisches Theater" was founded in 1970. Classical pieces such as Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides , Antigone by Sophocles or The Peace of Aristophanes are performed . But contemporary theater plays are also performed.

Olympos Festival

Estia, folk music, youth group

At the beginning of the 1970s, members of the Estia prepared the Hellenistic theater in Dion and the interior of the castle of Platamonas in order to be able to stage plays and concerts there. The venues are still used by the Olympos Festival initiated by the Estia Pieridon Mouson . In 1992, 20 years after its founding, the festival was transferred to the newly founded association OR.FE.O (Οργανισμός Φεστιβάλ Ολύμπου, ΟΡ.ΦΕ.Ο). The Olympos Festival is now the second largest of its kind in Greece.

Folklore and organization of traditional festivals

This department was formed in 1990 with the aim of researching Pieria's folklore and founding a folklore museum in Katerini. Some members make traditional costumes based on models from the beginning of the 20th century.

Folk music

Estia Pieridon Mouson, concert in ancient Pydna

Until its spin-off in 1992, the musicians performed together with the club's folk dance group. The musical repertoire ranges from ancient music from Pieria and Macedonia to contemporary music from all over Greece. The main concern of the musicians is the preservation and dissemination of the local songs. To date, 120 pieces have been recorded and archived for this reason.

photography

Since 1994 the association's photographers have founded their own department called Iris. Talented and semi-professional members pass on their knowledge in seminars. There is a darkroom, photographic equipment, training facilities and a library. In the transnational project "The National Cultural Heritage through the light of photography", between 2013 and 2015 we worked with photographers from five other European countries.

The group's works have been exhibited in various cities across Greece.

blood donation

In 2011 members began to donate blood in an organized manner in collaboration with the state hospital in Katerini.
