The Estrada de Ferro Campos do Jordão is a railway line and railway company in the Brazilian state of São Paulo and connects the places Campos do Jordão and Pindamonhangaba . Today only passengers are carried on this railway line. It is a tourist attraction and the company is state owned by the State of São Paulo and administered by the Secretariat for Sports and Tourism.

history

The Estrada de Ferro Campos do Jordão was proposed by the doctors Emílio Marcondes Ribas and Victor Godinho for the transport of the patients to the higher altitude climatic health resort Campos do Jordão in the Serra da Mantiqueira . The prevailing climatic conditions there meant that tuberculosis could be treated there.

The rail line was to connect the town of Pindamonhangaba in the valley of the Paraíba River with Campos do Jordão. Construction began in 1910 and opened on November 15, 1914. The route is 47 km long and the track width is 1000 mm.

In 1924 the entire line was electrified by the English Electric company .

Between the stations of Piracuama and Parada Cacique, the highest rail line in Brazil, also called Alto do Lageado, was built at 1743 m.
