Estradas de Portugal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EP Estradas de Portugal, SA was a Portuguese state company entrusted with the maintenance of (state) roads and highways in Portugal. Estradas de Portugal merged into the newly founded company Infraestruturas de Portugal on June 1, 2015 .

In November 2007 EP Estradas de Portugal SA was founded as a successor company of EP - Estradas de Portugal, EPE, which had been the agency for road administration in Portugal since 2005. EP Estradas de Portugal SA was a company wholly owned by the Portuguese State, had a 75 year concession to develop, design and maintain the road network of Portugal, with the exception of most of the provincial highways operated by BRISA SA operate.

EP was the successor to the Junta Autónoma das Estradas (JAE), which existed as an authority from 1927 to 1999 when it was replaced by three agencies: Instituto das Estradas de Portugal (IEP), Instituto para a Construção Rodoviária (ICOR), and Instituto para a Conservação e Exploração da Rede Rodoviária (ICERR). In 2002 they were restructured and reorganized as an authority in the IEP. In 2004 the IEP was converted into a public limited company and renamed EP - Estradas de Portugal, with 100% of the shares remaining in state ownership.

Since the beginning of 2014, the Portuguese government under Passos Coelho has been running the plan to merge the company with the state-owned rail network operator Rede Ferroviária Nacional . On the one hand, this should result in operating cost savings of a good 15 million euros. On the other hand, the merged, larger company should receive loans with lower interest rates to finance future infrastructure projects. Since January 1, 2015, both companies have been headed by the same Chairman of the Board of Directors ( presidente do conselho de administração ), António Ramalho .

The merger was completed on June 1, 2015.
