The E 501-523 of the Chemins de fer de l'État , later 2D2 5400 of the SNCF were electric locomotives that were used in express train service on the lines electrified with 1500 V direct current. The locomotives were very similar to PO E 503-537 , with which they had most of the technical points of the specification in common.

history

The E 501-523 were ordered in 1935 and delivered from December 1936 to the beginning of 1938. The vehicle body, which looks more modern than the PO locomotives, was designed by industrial architect Henri Pacon . The combination of headlights and headlights placed in the center under the front window gave the locomotives the nickname Cyclope ( Kyklop ).

Under the SNCF, the locomotives became the 2D2 5400 series with the numbers 5401–5423. As with the SNCF 2D2 5500 , the top speed was increased from 130 km / h to 140 km / h after the axlebox bearings had been converted from slide to roller bearings.

During the general overhaul between 1962 and 1965, the locomotives lost their one-eyed appearance when they were given a front face with two signal lights arranged above the side buffers and an aluminum panel, reminiscent of a mustache, arranged below the front windows. The paint was also changed to turquoise blue.

commitment

In the budget, the locomotives were often used together with the light steel wagons, which are known in French literature as voitures Saucission ("sausage wagons") because of their appearance . The locomotives were based in the Bordeaux depot .

The E 511, which was delivered on May 1, 1937, was retired on December 12, 1977 with a mileage of 6,162,089 km.
