Etienne Lamotte

Étienne Paul Marie Lamotte (born November 21, 1903 in Dinant ; † May 5, 1983 in Brussels ) was a Belgian Indologist , professor of Greek at the Catholic University of Leuven and a priest .

Lamotte first studied with Louis de La Vallée-Poussin and later opened up numerous research-relevant texts on Buddhism research, the systematization of which he promoted. The latter was aided by his knowledge of the main languages ​​of his subject - Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan. During his lifetime, the scholar was one of the most important and after his death in 1983 still widely received authorities in European Buddhist research.

In 1970 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy and in 1972 of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
