features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 24 to 30 millimeters. They have gray-brown forewings, on which a large, black-brown, wedge-shaped spot stands out near the basal field. In addition, two dark drawing elements, which approximately have the shape of isosceles triangles , can be seen in the post-disk region . Another dark brown spot can be seen near the wingtip on the leading edge. The hind wings are yellowish in color and show a narrow dark band in the fringe area.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are pale red-yellow in color and brown with speckles. The back line is made up of brownish dots, the side lines are white, the spiracles are outlined in yellow and black.

Similar species

There is little resemblance to the brown day owl ( Euclidia glyphica ), which, however, lacks the clear wedge spots. In the slightly larger Euclidia munita , the triangular spots are less pronounced and the basic color tends more towards light red-brown tones.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in Central and Southeastern Europe, also in Kazakhstan , Asia Minor and eastern regions of Siberia to the Pacific Ocean . It lives mostly in hot, dry areas.

Way of life

Euclidia triquetra is diurnal and likes to visit flowers in the sunshine. It forms two generations a year, the moths fly from mid-April to June and from late July to August. The caterpillars feed on various legumes (Fabaceae), such as tragacanth ( Astragalus ) or types of Esparsette ( Onobrychis ). The overwintering takes place in the pupal stage .

Danger

In Germany , the species is not native, so that a mention on the red list of endangered species is eliminated. The only occurrence in the German-speaking area concerns a few arid areas in easternmost Austria .
