Eudonia lacustrata is a butterfly from the family of Crambidae . It is widespread in Europe.
features
Eudonia lacustrata reaches a wingspan of up to 18 millimeters. The front wings are light gray to whitish with dark markings. In the field at the outer end of the forewing, the dark areas predominate. The hind wings are creamy white with a slightly darker margin.
Occurrence
The distribution area of this species covers all of Europe and northwest Africa and extends over Turkey, Syria, Iran, Siberia to western China. In Northern Europe, the species is absent in Lapland. In the mountains it does not rise above the tree line. In Iran and Armenia, the species is represented by the subspecies Eudonia lacustrata persica . She lives in the bushland, open forests and in gardens.
Way of life
The moths fly from May to October, depending on the region, usually a little later in the north. The oligophageous caterpillars then appear from September; they also overwinter and feed on mosses. Proven forage plants are common mosses ( Polytrichum ), Pottiaceae ( Tortella ), Hypnum (sleeping mosses) and Isothecium (Fam. Brachytheciaceae ). They live in a web on the moss.
Taxonomy
In older works the species appears under the name Scoparia crataegella . However, this name is not valid. In its place is the first available and validly introduced name i. e. Eudonia lacustrata (Panzer, 1804). The combination Dipleurina lacustrata is also often used. However, the most recent publications consider the genus Dipleurina to be synonymous with the genus Eudonia . The species is divided into two subspecies: the nominotypical subspecies Eudonia lacustrata lacustrata , which occurs in the greater part of the range, and Eudonia lacustrata persica Leraut, 1984, which is found in Iran and Armenia.
