Brachytheciaceae
Chimp.

The Brachytheciaceae are a family of moss - order Hypnales . They contain many species that are very common in Central Europe.

features

The Brachytheciaceae contain mosses of various shapes. They grow irregularly branched or regularly simply pinnate and form loose to dense lawns.

In most species, the leaves are broadly ovate or triangular and long, pointed. A leaf vein is always present and extends into the upper half of the leaf in most of the species. The cells of the leaves are prosenchymatic , that is, many times longer than they are wide and interlocking with pointed ends.

The capsule is erect and regular; it has a peristome made up of two rows of teeth. The capsule lid is beaked.

Occurrence

The mosses of this family grow on very different substrates: soil, rock or bark. Many individual species are also not picky about the substrate. They are common all over the world.

Systematics

The Brachytheciaceae are a family of the order Hypnales . They are the sister group of the Meteoriaceae . The Brachytheciaceae are divided into three subfamilies, which are poorly characterized morphologically, but well characterized in terms of molecular genetics. The family comprises 43 genera with around 560 species and, according to Frey and Stech (2009), is structured as follows (species are only listed as examples):

The following genera are provisionally placed in the family:
