Brachythecium (colloquially also known as short box, short capsule or cone moss) is a genus of plants and includes common deciduous mosses that occur in nutrient-rich locations.
Identifying features
Outwardly, the Brachythecium species are very diverse. Their stems are creeping to upright, their branches are very irregular to evenly. Their leaves are usually triangular, heart-shaped, oval or lanceolate in shape. They can be wrinkled or smooth and usually have a relatively long leaf tip. The stem and branch leaves can be designed in different ways. The leaf cells of the leaves are always prosenchymatic , thus forming a network of long, narrow cells. The leaf vein is almost always simply present and rarely extends beyond the center of the leaf. The capsule is mostly inclined and sits on a red capsule stem ( seta ). The capsule lid is usually short beaked.
Occurrence
Brachythecium species usually grow on nutrient-rich soil. They are also often found in locations with little lime. Some species grow on wood, while others grow on rock or on the ground. In Europe are Brachythecium TYPES widespread. They are particularly preferred in the vicinity of human settlements due to the high nutrient content of the soil.
Systematics
According to the Stech & Frey system, there is a strong change in the species included in this genus. In some cases, earlier Brachythecium species are separated into other genera (for example into the genera Brachytheciastrum , Sciuro-hypnum ) or individual species are taken over from other genera in Brachythecium ( Cirriphyllum , Homalothecium ).

- Brachythecium glareosum
- Brachythecium laetum
- Brachythecium mildeanum ( swamp short rifle moss )
- Bach short rifle moss ( Brachythecium rivulare )
- Common short rifle moss ( Brachythecium rutabulum )
- Smooth-handled short rifle moss ( Brachythecium salebrosum )
