Cirriphyllum is a genus of the moss . The individual species are yellowish to greenish in color and form lawns.

Identifying features

Cirriphyllum species only develop creeping trunks, which often develop numerous runners ( stolons ). Trunk and branch leaves are shaped identically and ovoid. They are also flat, with entire margins and only rarely dentate. At the front, the leaves suddenly turn into a short or long point and have a mostly simple, short vein at the base. The leaf cell network is provided with elongated ( prosenchymatic ) cells. The capsule is always inclined, the capsule stem ( seta ) is usually rough and the capsule lid is beaked.

The sudden transition of the leaves into the elongated leaf tip distinguishes Cirriphyllum plants from those of the similar genus Brachythecium .

Occurrence

The Cirriphyllum species are found in the Holarctic and Malaysia . In Europe they are mainly found in forests, but also in nutrient-rich ruderal locations.
