Eugène Chartier

Eugène Chartier (born around 1893 in Montreal , † November 1, 1963 in Beaconsfield (Québec) ) was a Canadian violinist , conductor and music teacher .

Life

Chartier was a violin student of Oscar Martel and Alfred De Sève . He was second violinist in the Dubois String Quartet from 1915 to 1920 and then played the viola in the Chamberland String Quartet until 1925 . He was also the violist of the Montreal Orchestra and the orchestras of the Montreal Festivals and the Promenade Symphony Concerts .

In 1922 he founded the orchestra of the Conservatoire national deMontreal (later the Montreal Philharmonic Orchestra ). From 1925 he taught at the Conservatoire National , also at the Colleges of Terrebonne and Berthier and at the Convent of Ste-Émilie de Viauville . His students included Roméo Mastrocola and Lucien Robert .

In 1932 Chartier became director of the Maisonneuve Regimental Band , and the following year he founded the Euterpe Chamber Music Society . In 1937 he was invited to conduct a performance of Beethoven's Eroica with the orchestra of the Promenade Symphony Concerts ; he also conducted several CBC broadcasts . In 1942 he conducted the world premiere of Eugène Lapierre's comic opera Père des amours at the Monument national .
