Eugène Siberdt
Eugène Siberdt (born April 21, 1851 in Antwerp ; † January 6, 1931 there ) was a Belgian genre, history and oriental painter.
Siberdt studied at the Académie royale des beaux-arts d'Anvers with Nicaise de Keyser , Edward Dujardin (1817–1879) and Polydore Beaufaux (1829–1905).
In 1873 he visited Paris and The Hague . From 1874, Siberdt exhibited his works at the most important Belgian art salons.
Siberdt was appointed professor at the Antwerp Academy in 1883. On January 18, 1886 Vincent van Gogh began to take drawing lessons on plaster models at the Antwerp Academy. Due to his unconventional painting style, Van Gogh quickly came into conflict with the professors, including Eugène Siberdt, and left the academy.
A typical representative of the academic tradition of the Antwerp Academy, Siberdt painted sentimental genre scenes and events from the glorious national history of the 16th and 17th centuries. Siberdt also created historical paintings with biblical themes and many orientalist compositions.
