Eugen Isaak Neter (born October 29, 1876 in Gernsbach , † October 8, 1966 in Degania ) was a German pediatrician .

Life

Neter was the son of the merchant Eli Neter and his wife Augusta, b. Sinauer. After graduating from high school in Rastatt , he studied medicine in Munich and Heidelberg from 1894 to 1899 . In 1900 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg, on April 1 of that year he became an assistant doctor at a Berlin hospital before he settled in Mannheim as a pediatrician from 1903. He wrote numerous papers on paediatrics and was a co-founder of the Fröbelseminar for prospective kindergarten teachers, where he also taught.

During the First World War, Neter was employed as a medical officer, after 1918 he headed the Mannheim branch of the Reich Association of Jewish Front Soldiers . After the National Socialists came to power, Neter was primarily concerned with the training and further education of young people willing to emigrate. He was briefly arrested during the November pogroms in 1938, after which he took over the chairmanship of Mannheim's Jewish community. When the Jews from Baden were deported to Gurs on October 22, 1940, Neter accompanied the Mannheim deportees and provided medical support to them in the camp. Because of his "mixed marriage" he was spared the deportations.

After 1945 he emigrated to Palestine and lived in Kibbutz Degania.
