Eugen Ulmer (publisher)

Eugen Ulmer (born July 30, 1837 in Nürtingen , † January 2, 1917 in Stuttgart ) was a German publisher and bookseller . He founded the publishing house Eugen Ulmer , which still exists today, as a specialist publisher for agriculture , forestry , fruit , vegetable , horticultural and viticulture .

Life path and life's work

Eugen Ulmer, the son of a pharmacist, took over a pomological publishing house in 1868 , which he continued under his name, relocated to Stuttgart in 1874 and expanded it into a major specialist publisher. The publishing program consisted exclusively of books and writings from the fields of agriculture and forestry, fruit, vegetable, horticultural and viticulture. His publishing house also published numerous magazines , including since 1891 the magazine for plant diseases , since 1898 the practical sheets for plant cultivation and plant protection , since 1900 Fühling's agricultural newspaper and since 1903 the natural science magazine for forestry and agriculture .

It was a particular concern of Eugen Ulmer to make the results of scientific research accessible to farmers in publicly understood publications . An example of this was the series Des Landmanns Winterabende, comprising over one hundred volumes . Teaching and entertaining from all branches of agriculture . For his services as a publisher, Ulmer was awarded the Great Medal for Art and Science on the ribbon of the Frederick Order by the King of Württemberg in 1905 .
