Eugen Virmond (born October 28, 1844 in Blumenthal (Hellenthal) ; died November 7, 1906 in Hellenthal ) was a Prussian local historian, writer and royal Prussian postal administrator. In addition to a large number of other writings and previously unpublished poems, he wrote the first comprehensive account of the Schleiden district and the history of the iron industry in the Eifel.

Life

Eugen Virmond was the only son of three children of the former riding master and, as a result of the decline of the iron industry in the region, was post expedition Gustav Virmond (born October 21, 1804 in Blumenthal; died May 30, 1878 in Kirschseiffen ) from his marriage Louise Strunk (born October 4, 1815 in Blumenthal; died March 2, 1865 in Kirschseiffen). While the Virmond family ran ironworks in the Schleiden Valley, Louise was the daughter of the then district physician Wilhelm Strunk.

In the same year that his father was appointed mail carrier and moved to Kirschseiffen with his family, Eugen also joined the postal service in February 1862. In 1875 he was appointed post administrator, first in Kirschseiffen and from 1884 with the opening of the Kall-Hellenthal railway line in Hellenthal. On January 1, 1894, he retired from this position. Virmond had two children with Pauline Staudt, the daughter of a Hellenthal merchant whom he married in 1881, Wilhelm Otto, who died of scarlet fever , and Kurt, who was born in Hellenthal in 1886. In particular, his elaboration on the Schleiden district of 1898 remained the only reliable sources of this kind for decades, especially his description of the history of the iron industry in the Eifel made Virmond known beyond the region and continues to be cited as the original source. According to an article in the Kölnische Zeitung on September 7, 1899, Virmond's district history combined "a sound judgment with a clever linguistic presentation". In Hellenthal, the Virmond family lived not far from the in-laws Staudt. On the 100th anniversary of his death in 2006, a commemorative plaque for Eugen Virmond was placed at the junction between Trierer Strasse and An der Linde near the location of the no longer existing house ( location ).

Virmond is buried next to his wife, who died in 1923, in the abandoned Hellenthaler Friedhof on Trierer Strasse, in the entire area of the Staudt family cemetery ( Lage ).
