Eugene J. McCaffrey junior (born around 1933 in Providence , Rhode Island , † June 23, 2017 in Warwick , Rhode Island) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and lawyer . During his political career, he was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and the Rhode Island Senate . From 1973 to 1976 he was Mayor of Warwick, Rhode Island.

Life

McCaffrey was born to Eugene J. McCaffrey and his wife Catherine (nee Atkinson) and grew up with two brothers and two sisters in Oakland Beach . He attended LaSalle Academy in Providence and Providence College . After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in the latter , he served in the United States Marine Corps . In December 1959, he retired from active military service in the rank of 1st Lieutenant . In the United States Marine Corps Reserve, to which he later belonged, he reached the rank of major .

After retiring from active military service, McCaffrey began studying at the Law School of Suffolk University , where he received a Juris Doctor . McCaffrey practiced law for more than 50 years and was admitted to practice in the State of Rhode Island, the United States District Court, and the United States Supreme Court . He began his legal career with the McEntee, Morriss and Vacca law firm in Providence and opened his own part-time law firm in Warwick while he was still there. This law firm later became the first full-time law firm in Warwick. In 1988 his daughter, Mary E. McCaffrey, who later became a District Court judge for Rhode Island, started working for the law firm. He was followed in 1989 by his son, who later became a Senator in the Senate of Rhode Island, Michael J. McCaffrey, and in 1990 his son, John T. McCaffrey.

In 1966 McCaffrey was elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives for the 34th District. He was later elected to the Rhode Island Senate, to which he served for three terms. In 1972 he was elected Mayor of Warwick. In 1974 he was re-elected. In 1976 he stood, supported by the party leadership, in the Democratic Primaries for a candidacy in the elections for the United States House of Representatives , but was defeated by Edward Beard .

McCaffrey was married with one daughter and four sons. He died in June 2017 at the age of 84.
