Hans Martin Weingartner

Hans Martin Weingartner (born Hans Martin Weingartner April 4, 1929 in Heidelberg ; died May 6, 2014 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American financial scientist.

Life

Hans Martin Weingärtner's father Jacob Weingärtner was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp after the November pogroms in 1938 . The family managed to escape to the USA in 1939, along with his older brother, who later became the philosopher Rudolph Herbert Weingartner . Weingartner received US citizenship in 1944. He married Joyce Trellis in 1955 and they have four children.

Weingartner attended Brooklyn Technical High School and Queens College in 1944 . He was a soldier in the Korean War and then studied at the University of Chicago and received an MA in economics in 1951. Then worked for the United States Department of Commerce in Washington until 1953 . He then studied again at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he received his doctorate in 1963 with the dissertation Mathematical programming and the analysis of capital budgeting problems .

Weingartner has been a research fellow at the University of Rochester , MIT, and the University of Chicago. In 1977 he became Professor of Finance at Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management , where he retired in 1998. He also worked as a management consultant in the financial services sector.

Weingartner held the presidency of the Institute of Management Sciences in 1985/86 . He was also a member of the American Economic Association , the American Finance Association, and from 1967 to 1973 Department Editor for Finance for Management Science .
