Eugenio Giuseppe Togliatti (born November 3, 1890 in Orbassano , Italy , † October 5, 1977 in Genoa ) was an Italian mathematician and university professor.

Life and research

Togliatti studied and received his doctorate in 1912 at the University of Turin , where he also completed his habilitation. In 1915 he received the Steiner Prize from the Berlin Academy of Sciences . In 1924 he was appointed professor of applied mathematics at the University of Zurich and after just 3 semesters at the University of Genoa for analytical and projective geometry. In 1944 he had to stop teaching because of political persecution. After the Second World War he resumed his work at the University of Genoa and was appointed a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei . He continues his research by publishing his work in journals in Italy and abroad and was the author of a biography of the German mathematician Hermann Günther Grassmann . In the field of projective differential geometry, he researched three-dimensional varieties of five-dimensional space, the main tangents of which have coincidences. He also dealt with hyperspace surfaces, which represent Laplace's equations if those surfaces are algebraic or rational. In the field of algebraic geometry, he built a fifth order surface with 31 nodes known as the Togliatti surface and got a significant partial result within the problem of determining the maximum number of nodes of an algebraic surface of order n. He was also interested in the Teaching math in secondary schools and devoting numerous popular articles to enhancing the scientific culture of teachers.

From 1931 to 1963 he was dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Genoa, from 1933 to 1966 director of the Mathematical Institute and the attached library. From 1957 to 1959 he was the National President of Mathematics and a member of the Italian Mathematics Teaching Committee and from 1958 to 1966 he was part of the Supreme Council for Public Education. In 1994 the Library Service Center for Mathematics and Computer Science (CSBMI) of the University of Genoa was named “Eugenio Togliatti”.
