Eulychnia acida is a species of plant in the genus Eulychnia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet acida comes from Latin , means 'sour' and refers to the taste of the fruit.
description
Eulychnia acida usually grows tree-shaped, sometimes also shrubby, is richly branched and reaches heights of 1.5 to 4 meters. Usually there is a clear trunk. The usually upright shoots are gray-green and 6 to 10 centimeters in diameter. There are 10 to 16 low broad ribs . The needle-like thorns are initially maroon and gray with age. The 1 to 2 protruding central spines are 10 to 20 centimeters long. The approximately 12 radial spines are more or less radiating.
The white flowers occasionally have a pale pink central stripe and are 5 to 7 inches long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with bushes of short hair. The spherical, yellowish-green fruits reach a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
The distribution area of Eulychnia acida extends from the Chilean region of Atacama to the region of Coquimbo .
The first description was in 1864 by Rudolph Amandus Philippi .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
