Eumenes pedunculatus is a species from the order of the hymenoptera (Hymenoptera) within the solitary wasps (Eumeninae).

features

The wasps reach a body length of 13 to 17 millimeters (females) or 11 to 15 millimeters (males). Their body is yellow-black in color. The second sternite is slightly hairy. The clypeus has some longer hair on top. In the males, the last link of the antennae is curved like a hook and hairless on the inside. The species is difficult to distinguish from the other species of the potter's wasps and in particular from Eumenes coarctatus .

Occurrence

The species occurs from Europe to central Russia . It colonizes various dry and temperature-favored habitats, such as heaths , forest edges and excavation pits. The animals also fly in two generations from early May to early October. They can be found widespread in Central Europe.

Way of life

Eumenes pedunculatus puts his globular nests on stalks, preferably for example at heather ( Calluna vulgaris ), usually only a few centimeters above the ground on. They only contain a single cell. Fine clay is used as building material. The opening of the nest is widened in the shape of a collar with clay, making it so tight that the female can only stick her abdomen into the opening. A single egg is attached to the ceiling of the nest with a short thread. Then the food for the offspring is captured. Mostly caterpillars are introduced by tensioners , but occasionally also larvae of weevils by stuffing them through the narrow opening with the front legs. The nest is supplied with up to 10 caterpillars. The species is parasitized by Chrysis ruddii .
