description

The succulent Euphorbia ampliphylla forms trees up to 30 meters high. The terminal shoots are triangular, 5 to 17 centimeters wide and provided with 15 to 40 centimeters long constrictions. On the slightly wing-like edges there are bulky teeth at a distance of 1.5 to 3 centimeters from one another. The rounded thorn shields reach up to 5 millimeters in diameter. Strong thorns up to 3 millimeters in length are formed. The obovate leaves are on a 1 centimeter long stem, 15 centimeters long and 6 centimeters wide and are long-lived on younger shoots.

The inflorescence is made up of one to three simple cymes in a horizontal line on stalks up to 4 millimeters long. The cyathia reach about 7 millimeters in diameter. The elliptical nectar glands almost touch each other and are colored yellow. The ovary is provided with a 5- to 12-lobed flower cover. The spherical fruit stands on a thick, 3 millimeter long stem and is up to 12 millimeters long and 16 millimeters wide. It is fleshy, red in color, becomes harder and bluntly lobed with increasing maturity. The almost round and smooth seed reaches 4.5 millimeters in diameter.
