Euphorbia atrocarmesina is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia atrocarmesina branches out from the base, forms shrubs with upright and spreading shoots and reaches a height of about 75 centimeters. The four to six-sided branches have deep, 8 centimeters long and 6 centimeters wide constrictions that are egg-shaped. On the winged edges of the shoots there are bulged teeth and the thorn shields form a coherent horn edge. There are 1 to 12 millimeter long spines and very small stipule spines.

The cymen consist of one to three, individually standing cyathia , which stand on a strong, up to 4.5 millimeter long stem. The dark blood-red colored cyathia reach about 8.5 millimeters in diameter. The five to seven nectar glands are elongated and touch each other. The bluntly lobed fruit is sessile and is 5.5 millimeters long and 8 millimeters wide. The spherical seed is about 3 millimeters in size and is smooth.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia atrocarmesina is common in Angola in the Cuanza Sul province .

The species was first described in 1968 by Leslie Charles Leach . A distinction is made between the following varieties:

  • Euphorbia atrocarmesina var. Arborea L.C.Leach (1977); In contrast to the trunk species, small trees up to about 1.5 meters high are formed with a short and thick trunk
  • Euphorbia atrocarmesina var. Atrocarmesina
