Euphorbia bongolavensis is a species of the genus milkweed ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the milkweed family(Euphorbiaceae).
description
The only slightly succulent Euphorbia bongolavensis forms shrubs up to 1 meter in height. The short trunk with a peeling bark is up to 40 centimeters high and up to 4 centimeters thick. The thin side shoots are 10 pieces in a tuft at the shoot ends and are up to 30 centimeters long. The tips of the shoots are thickened to about 2 centimeters in length and densely covered with leaf scars. The three to eight leaves heaped at the tip of the shoots are lanceolate and up to 6.5 centimeters long and 3.5 centimeters wide. They stand on a red, up to 1 centimeter long stem.
The male cyathia stand in groups of three or four in clusters, the female ones stand individually. They are about 2 millimeters tall and are almost sitting. The elliptical nectar glands are colored yellow. The bluntly lobed fruit becomes 7 millimeters long and 5 millimeters wide. It stands on a 2 millimeter long handle. The spherical seed is 1.5 millimeters in size.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia bongolavensis is endemic to north-west Madagascar in the province of Mahajanga in dry forests. The species is on the IUCN Red List and is considered endangered (Vulnerable).
The species was first described in 1993 by Werner Rauh .
