The succulent Euphorbia calamiformis forms splayed shrubs up to 3 meters high. The richly branched bushes have few woody shoots. These are thin, break quickly, are at right angles from the main shoot and are up to 15 centimeters long. The leaf scars are thickened. The sedentary and linear-lanceolate leaves are short-lived and are 30 millimeters long and 3 millimeters wide.

The inflorescence consists of cymes , which are terminally in three- to five-rayed umbels, the rays of which are up to 3 centimeters long. The middle cyme is sitting. The triangular bracts are about 4.5 millimeters long and 3.5 millimeters wide. The cyathia reach 5 millimeters in diameter. The four elliptical nectar glands , five in the middle cyathium, are colored yellow and are 2 millimeters long and 3.5 millimeters wide. The bluntly lobed fruit is about 6 millimeters in size and has the same length of stalk. It contains the egg-shaped seed, which is about 3 millimeters in size. This has a wrinkled surface and has an appendage .
