Eupithecia cauchiata , also known as Bergwald-Goldenrauten-Flütenspanner or Goldenrauten-Flütenspanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae). The species was named by Duponchel after its finder Amédée Cauchy .

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 18 to 22 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings is mostly whitish gray with light brown elements. They are covered with many very fine wavy lines. The fringing area is slightly darkened. A center point is very indistinct or completely absent. The hind wings with little drawing are slightly lighter than the forewings.

egg

The yellowish green, slightly shiny egg has an elongated shape.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are greenish in color and have distinct yellowish side stripes.

Doll

The pupae have an ocher yellow color and show greenish wing sheaths. On the cremaster there are two stronger and three thinner hook bristles on each side.

Similar species

Eupithecia satyrata has a predominantly gray-brown and Eupithecia pernotata a predominantly yellow-gray basic color.

As with many flowering species, however, a reliable determination should be carried out by specialists, and a genital morphological analysis is also advisable for clear identification.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

Eupithecia cauchiata occurs sparsely from the Pyrenees to the Urals . The northern limit of distribution runs along the southern coast of Finland . In the Alps , the animals can be found in climatically favorable places up to an altitude of 1500 meters. They prefer light coniferous and mixed forests.

Way of life

The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and fly from mid-May to late July. They also appear in both sexes in artificial light sources . The caterpillars live from July to September. They feed on the leaves of the common goldenrod ( Solidago virgaurea ), which is why they differ from many other species of pacifier that feed on flowers or fruits. The pupae overwinter, sometimes twice.

Danger

In Germany, Eupithecia cauchiata occurs only in a few federal states, is mostly rare and is listed in Category 2 (severely endangered) on the Red List of Endangered Species . In Rhineland-Palatinate , it is “threatened with extinction” (category 1), while in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania it is “potentially endangered” (category 4).
