Eupteryx atropunctata , also known as the colorful potato leaf cicada , is a cicada of the subfamily of leaf cicadas (Typhlocybinae) within the suborder of the round-headed leaf hoppers (Cicadomorpha). The name addition atropunctata is derived from Latin ( ater = black, punctatus = "dotted").

The cicadas have a length of about 3.5 mm. They have a yellow basic color with a black pattern of spots. The yellow has a slight green cast. There are two larger black spots on the vertex . On the pronotum there are two larger black lobe-shaped spots in the front area near the side margin. In addition, there is usually a small black spot in the middle of the front edge of the pronotum. The label has two black spots in the basal area, which are separated from each other by a narrow yellow stripe. There are several dark and black spots on the yellowish forewings.

distribution

The Palearctic species is widespread in Europe. Their distribution area extends to North Africa and the Middle East . The species was introduced in North America. In 1979 she was reported in Connecticut . Eupteryx atropunctata has now established itself in the northeastern United States and in the adjacent part of Canada.

Way of life

The adults are observed from May to October. They can be found on various herbaceous plants, often on mallow family , potatoes and true sage .
