features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of about 50 to 75 millimeters. There is little sexual dimorphism . In both sexes, the basic wing color is milky white. Broadly rimmed black veins stand out on top of all wings. In the males, a series of red spots can be seen in the submarginal region of the hind wings, which is absent in the females. In English usage, the species is referred to as Painted Courtesan ("Made up courtesan "). The underside of the wing reproduces the drawing of the upper side and also shows some red spots in the basal region of the hind wings in the males. Short tails are only indicated. The strong yellow color of the compound eyes is striking in both sexes . The well-developed proboscis is black. White longitudinal stripes stand out on the sides of the black thorax . The abdomen is whitish and has black horizontal stripes.

Pre-imaginal stages

The egg has a green color, a spherical shape, is slightly flattened at the base and the micropyle and is covered with many transverse ribs.

The nudibranch-shaped, fully grown, light green caterpillars are equipped with two greenish, prickly horns. They also have a forked abdomen end.

The almost monochrome light green doll is designed as a falling doll and shows two short points at the head end.

Similar species

The moths of Euripus nyctelius have an overall darker appearance. The males also lack the row of red spots in the submarginal region of the hind wings. Hestina assimilis differs from the males of Euripus consimilis by the black seeded spots in the red row of spots in the submarginal region of the hind wings and in both sexes by the black compound eyes and the yellow proboscis.
