Hestina assimilis is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of the noble butterfly (Nymphalidae) that occursin Southeast Asia.

features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of about 80 to 100 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism . In both sexes, the basic wing color is milky white. Broadly rimmed black veins stand out on top of all wings. In both males and females, a series of red, black nucleated spots can be seen in the submarginal region of the hind wings. However, in some females, the red spots are very pale. In English usage, the species is known as the Red Ring Skirt ("red ringed rock"). The underside of the wing depicts the drawing of the upper side somewhat weakened. The thorax and abdomen are gray and show a black longitudinal stripe in the middle. The color of the compound eyes is black in both sexes. The strong proboscis is yellow.

Caterpillar

The fully grown nudibranch -shaped grass-green caterpillars are equipped with two light brown, V-shaped forked horns. There are some small yellowish tubercles on the back . The caterpillars also have a forked abdomen end.

Similar species

The butterflies from Hestina nicevillei have an overall lighter appearance. They also lack the row of red spots in the submarginal region of the hind wings. Euripus consimilis is smaller and differs from the males of Hestina assimilis by the non- nucleated spots in the submarginal region of the hind wings and in both sexes by the yellow compound eyes and the black proboscis.

distribution and habitat

Hestina assimilis occurs in China , Tibet and Vietnam as well as Taiwan . After Japan is kind either immigrated or has been founded by the uncontrolled release of individuals from other regions. Since the climatic and biological prerequisites for reproduction existed in Japan, the species is now indigenous there. The first record in Japan took place in 1995. There are currently four subspecies .

The species inhabits tropical forests, slightly hilly terrain and parks, provided that the food plants of the caterpillars are represented.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations throughout the year, mainly in May. They like to suck on damp ground, overripe fruits or excrement in order to absorb liquids and minerals. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of hackberry trees ( Celtis ), for example Celtis formosana or Celtis sinensis, as well as the Trema orientalis, which belongs to the hemp family (Cannabaceae) .
