history

An Airbus A320 in the original Eurocypria livery.

Eurocypria was founded on June 12, 1991 as a subsidiary of Cyprus Airways to act as a holiday airline to Western Europe. The company was the first charter airline in the Republic of Cyprus .

The flight service began on March 25, 1992 with two leased aircraft of the type Airbus A320 , which were taken over by the parent company. The company operated IT charter flights for various tour operators and initially set up 17 direct connections between Europe and the Republic of Cyprus. In April 1993 and March 2001, Eurocyria took over another A320 each. As part of a modernization, the fleet was completely renewed from 2003 and the existing A320s were replaced by Boeing 737-800s .

In 2003 the airline carried 500,178 passengers.

The company was also socially committed, for example, some flights were held as a charity event for Cypriot children.

As part of a restructuring measure, Cyprus Airways sold Eurocypria in June 2006 for 13,450,000.00 Cyprus pounds (€ 23.4 million) to the Cypriot state. Both airlines now belonged to Cyprus, but they have been competitors since the sale.

In November 2010 it was announced that the government would dissolve Eurocypria after the EU had not allowed a merger with Cyprus Airways and the state could not maintain two competing airlines. Eurocypria filed for bankruptcy on November 4th. The airline has stopped operating since November 13th.

aims

Eurocypria started from bases in Larnaka and Paphos in the Republic of Cyprus. In the winter months they had two other bases in Crete and in Sharm el-Sheikh . Eurocypria said it operated flights to and from over 70 airports in 20 countries. In Germany, there were flights to Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Munich, among others.

fleet

Before flight operations ceased, the Eurocypria fleet consisted of six aircraft as of January 2010:

Name and color scheme

The main feature of the Eurocypria fleet was that although each of the aircraft had the same logo on the vertical stabilizer , the background color was different for each. In addition, the machines are named after the typical winds from Greek mythology :

  • Euros (tail in green): means southeast wind
  • Notos (tail unit in purple): means south winds
  • Zephyros (tail unit in dark blue): means warm humid wind from the west in spring
  • Levante (tail unit in light blue): means warm east wind in autumn
  • Maistros (tail unit in gray): means northwest wind
  • Grecos (tail unit in white): means northeast wind
