history

The former state-owned airline Cyprus Airways had to cease operations on January 9, 2015 after the EU Commission ruled that it had received unlawful state aid. As a result, the Cypriot government decided in January 2015 to set up a new company.

On June 1, 2016, Cobalt Air's first flight from Larnaka to Athens took place. On June 17, Cyprus Mail announced that Swiss board member Urs Meisterhans had been charged with suspected money laundering and securities fraud. Due to an EU directive, the airline's license could therefore be withdrawn. Urs Meisterhans is involved in Florian Homm's investment fraud .

On the evening of October 17, 2018, Cobalt Air ceased operations. The airline was previously largely financed by Chinese investors.

Destinations

From Larnaka , Cobalt Air offered flights to destinations in Europe . In 2017, long-haul flights with the Airbus A330 to China , South Africa and America should take place. However, the plans were never implemented. To this end, the route network outside of Europe was expanded to include Moscow , Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi .
