European vaccination week

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Immunization Week (EIW) is an annual, by the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO / Europe) coordinated regional initiative to the immunization of diseases that can be prevented by vaccination drive. The EIW takes place in April every year over a period of one week. The EIW motto is: Prevention. Protect. Vaccinate.

activities

EIW activities are carried out by the participating countries (Member States) of the WHO Europe region. In the past, this has included: disseminating informational materials about vaccination , organizing vaccination campaigns, providing training for health professionals , planning workshops or conferences with policy-makers to discuss vaccination issues, and holding press conferences on vaccination-related topics . Starting from the whole of America and Europe, the initiative has expanded into a global vaccination campaign (World Vaccination Week).

Goal setting

The initiative promotes the message that vaccinating every child makes a crucial contribution to preventing disease and protecting lives. According to WHO / Europe, EIW has three objectives: to increase vaccination coverage across Europe by raising public awareness of the benefits of immunization ; promote national vaccination systems; and create a framework for mobilizing public and political support for vaccination efforts.

Partner of the EIW

The partner organizations involved in EIW include UNICEF , the World Bank , the Measles & Rubella Initiative and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and Rotary International. Activities at national and local level take place in WHO member states with the involvement of other stakeholders.

Patron of the EIW

Mary of Denmark is the Patron of the WHO Regional Office for Europe and in that capacity participates in activities related to European Immunization Week. At the start of the EIW 2008 she said: “Every child has the right to grow up healthy and to be vaccinated against diseases that are so easy to fight. I hope that countries within the Region will work swiftly and effectively to ensure that children and adults, particularly those of vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups, have access to vaccination and basic health services. The outbreaks made it very clear that if vaccine-preventable diseases spread, shared boundaries create general threats. One of the best ways to combat these threats is to share responsibility for vaccination, especially at the subregional level. EIW 2011 highlighted the importance of working together and sharing both experiences and solutions to keep vaccine-preventable diseases under control in the European Region. Of the 53 Member States in WHO Europe, 52 participated in European Immunization Week 2011. Her Royal Highness Princess Mathilde of Belgium attended the regional launch of the initiative in her capacity as Special Envoy for Vaccination for the WHO Regional Office for Europe .
