The Europäische Rundfunk- und Fernseh-GmbH is the oldest private broadcasting company operated in the Federal Republic of Germany .

It was founded on May 17, 1952 as the Saarländische Fernseh-AG . Its main shareholders were Rainier III. from Monaco , Charles Michelson (from Radio Monte Carlo ) and the Saarland Broadcasting Administration. Through a contract with the Saarland Broadcasting Administration and the newly founded Saarländische Rundfunk GmbH , it received the right to host a television and radio program. The German-language television program was Telesaar for Saarland (1953-58), the French-language radio program has been Europe 1 for France since 1955 ( LW - Sender Felsberg-Berus , production in Paris) and the planned European television program was called Europe No. 1 television , which never came about due to the political upheaval in Saarland.

With the accession of the Saarland to the Federal Republic, the Saarländische Fernseh-AG became its first private broadcaster. In 1959 the company was renamed European Broadcasting and Television Corporation (ERFAG; French: Compagnie européenne de radiodiffusion et de télévision , CERT). In 1964, the contractual basis of Europe 1 was legally recognized to a certain extent. Europe 1 has been part of Groupe Lagardère since 1974 , and the VHF transmitter network was expanded in France. The AG was converted into a GmbH in 1999.

In contrast to RTL , the holdings of the Europäische Rundfunk- und Fernseh-GmbH play only a minor role in the German media market. The Europäische Rundfunk- und Fernseh-GmbH is involved in the private broadcaster Radio Salü and also in Hitradio 100'5 , Antenne AC and Classic Rock Radio .
