The European high school Bertha von Suttner is a high school in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf .

history

The school was founded on April 22, 1908 by representatives of the citizens of the former village of Reinickendorf on a private basis as a " Higher School for Girls ". In 1913 the Prussian state took it over as the official " Lyceum Reinickendorf" for grades 1 to 10. The school initially had no building of its own, but was housed in the buildings of other schools during the First World War and the Weimar Republic . During the Second World War it was relocated to Křtiny near Brno due to the bombing raids on Berlin . In 1946 the first schoolgirls, who had meanwhile returned to Berlin, passed their Abitur.

In the school year 1946/47 the school was named Bertha-von-Suttner-Oberschule in memory of the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate Bertha von Suttner. In 1952, as part of the general introduction of coeducation , it also accepted boys for the first time. In the summer of 1960 the school received its own building at Reginhardstrasse 172, which was expanded in 1981 with an extension.

Until the Wall was built in 1961, there were so-called "Eastern classes" at the school, which were attended by students from the nearby Soviet sector of the city.

today

Since the 1983/84 school year, the school has been offering, in addition to the modern language branch with transition to grade 7, an ancient language branch beginning in grade 5, whereby the language sequence consists of English, Latin and ancient Greek. Since the 1999/2000 school year, French can also be chosen as a third foreign language as an alternative to ancient Greek. From year 9 onwards, Spanish or Chinese can be selected as the fourth language.

The name of the European Gymnasium Bertha von Suttner, which was given in October 2011, is intended to express that the school would like to support the project of European unification in a positive way. This European and international orientation is also reflected in the 13 schools in Europe, Canada and the USA with which the grammar school maintains partnerships. The school also offers various bilingual programs.

Because of its scientific and technical focus, the grammar school has been recognized as a “ MINT- friendly school” since 2013 . Since 2014 the school has also had the "Quality Seal for Excellent Professional Orientation".
