The European Network Remembrance and Solidarity was founded in 2005 by the culture ministers of Germany , Poland , Slovakia and Hungary . Romania joined in 2014 . The task of the network is to research, document and disseminate the history and memory discourses of the 20th century in Europe. The main focus is on the periods of dictatorships and wars as well as the social revolt against bondage.

In cooperation with international institutions and experts, the network has already implemented numerous research, cultural and educational projects.

Idea and goals

  • The European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity aims to research, deepen, disseminate and document the history of the 20th century. An age that was shaped by wars, dictatorships and totalitarianisms , the causes, processes and consequences of which are to be investigated, particularly with regard to phenomena such as violence and resistance. In its activities, the network strives to ensure that the historical narration that it sets or promotes is based on the latest scientific knowledge.
  • The task of the network is to support the process of understanding the history of the 20th century through an exchange of historical facts and different historical images. In this way, the network wants to promote a form of solidarity between the countries and encourage reflection on the events of the past century.
  • The network pursues its goals in cooperation with international partners. In the case of some projects, the network itself is the source of ideas and the main organizer; in other projects it supports partner institutions in terms of content and finances. The international bodies of the network decide on all programs.
  • The network organizes conferences, symposia and workshops, prepares scientific publications and oversees the translation of works, especially those that encompass the aspects of 20th century history outlined at the beginning and should be made known to an international readership. The tasks of the network also include the dissemination of historical knowledge for a group of not only professional interested parties, among other things with the help of exhibitions and the production of films on historical topics.
