Matthias Weber

Matthias Weber (born June 22, 1961 in Ludwigsburg ) is a German historian and director of the Federal Institute for Culture and History of Germans in Eastern Europe (BKGE). His work focuses on the history of Silesia , German legal history in the early modern period and German-East Central European relations in the modern era.

Life

Weber studied history and German at the University of Stuttgart and passed the state examination in 1985 . In 1989 he did his doctorate under Norbert Conrads with a dissertation on The Relationship of Silesia to the Old Empire in the Early Modern Age . In 1996 he completed his habilitation in “Modern History and German Regional History” at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg with a thesis on the Silesian Police and State Regulations of the Early Modern Age . From 1985 to 1990 Weber was a research assistant at the Historical Institute of the University of Stuttgart, from 1990 research assistant at the Federal Institute for Culture and History of Germans in Eastern Europe (BKGE) in Oldenburg, of which he has been director since 2004. Since 1999 he has also been an adjunct professor at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg.

Weber led international research projects with partners in East Central Europe, wrote several monographs and numerous articles, is editor and co-editor of numerous scientific and popular scientific anthologies, series of publications and a member of scientific committees:

  • 2013: Special Prize of the German-Polish Society of the University of Wrocław ( Breslau )
  • 2018: Prize of Princess Hedwig of Silesia, awarded by the city and the University of Breslau / Wrocław and the Silesian Salon
