The European protected area Saminatal ( Natura 2000 areas , also: Spirkenwälder Saminatal ) is located in the municipality of Frastanz in Vorarlberg , Austria in the Rätikon . It includes forest , especially mountain pines (Spirken). The mountain pines are considered to be "survivors" and can also grow in very nutrient-poor areas, as is the case here, but also in acidic subsoil, such as in raised bogs .

The purpose of the European protected area Saminatal is the protection of endangered wild native plant and animal species and their natural habitats.

Legal basis

According to the Vorarlberg Nature Conservation Ordinance, the Saminatal European protected area was designated as such with a simple state law. The flora-fauna-habitat directive 92/43 / EEC (FFH directive) of the European Union forms the basis for the protection .

The European protected area Saminatal is located on the border between Liechtenstein and Austria in the municipality of Frastanz and has roughly the shape of an irregular oval . The upper part of the Samina valley - with the source of the Samina - lies on Liechtenstein territory. On the Austrian side, the entire area comprises a smaller part of the central Samina valley and is located at an altitude of around 830  m above sea level. A. up to 2200  m above sea level A. To the south, still in the protected area, is the Galinakopf ( 2198  m above sea level ). The Galinagrat, which runs north from here (over the Hohe Köpfe ( 2066  m above sea level )) forms the eastern border of the protected area.

Purpose and scope of protection

In accordance with the Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive (Annex I of the Habitats Directive), the priority habitat of mountain pine (montane and subalpine Pinus uncinata) on forests on gypsum and lime substrates is particularly protected for this protected area .

This European protected area is one of three more in the Rätikon to protect the mountain pine deposits ( European protected area Spirkenwälder Innergamp , European protected area Spirkenwald Oberer Tritt , European protected area Spirkenwälder Brandnertal ). These four protected areas cover the largest occurrences in Vorarlberg and around half of the Austria-wide spirke stocks.

Use and traffic

The European protected area is rarely used as a local recreation area, especially the water for energy generation in power plants in Liechtenstein and Austria.

There are no public roads leading into the protected area.
