European Pressphoto Agency , EPA for short , is an international picture news agency . It is an association of eleven European photo agencies and distributes press photos worldwide.
The EPA was founded in 1985 in The Hague by seven European news agencies. Founding members were Agence France-Presse (AFP, France), Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP, Netherlands), ANOP (now Lusa Agência de Notícias de Portugal , Portugal), Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata (ANSA, Italy), Belga (Belgium), Germans Press Agency (dpa, Germany) and Agencia EFE (Spain). The official start of the service was January 1st, 1985. The original goal was to supply the European market with high quality press images, caused by increasing demand from various customers such as newspapers, magazines and television. In 2003 EPA entered the picture market worldwide and since then has operated, in addition to the current picture service, a photo archive with over six million photos.
EPA sends around 2,000 images every day. 400 photographers, both own and from the various partner agencies, work for the agency worldwide. The images are processed in the Frankfurt headquarters and delivered to the customers. The picture service includes news photos from politics, sport, business, finance as well as art, culture and entertainment.
In 2003, AFP retired as a shareholder and main supplier of non-European images. EPA was then restructured. Today the agency consists of the following shareholders (as of 2017):
- Agencia EFE in Spain
- Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata (ANSA) in Italy
- Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP) in the Netherlands
- Athens News Agency - Macedonian Press Agency (ANA-MPA) in Greece
- Austria Press Agency (APA) in Austria
- Keystone in Switzerland
- Lusa - Agência de Notícias de Portugal in Portugal
- Magyar Távirati Iroda (mti) in Hungary
- Polska Agencja Prasowa (pap) in Poland
The image services of The Associated Press , Thomson Reuters and AFP / Getty Images are in direct competition with the EPA .
