Epistemology

Engelen works out a “logic of feelings” in her writings (including 2007), which cannot be reduced to just a mental evaluation. Conceptualized emotions and feelings therefore form their own evaluation system. According to Engelen's view, every assessment system with which man defines knowledge and truth is not only based on rational convictions, but also on feelings.

Philosophy of mind

Engelen's work is clearly influenced by the theses of the neuroscientist António Damásio . Accordingly, the experience of feelings and emotions is an essential part of the development and constitution of human consciousness . Feelings are also an essential part of intentional relatedness - also a prerequisite for self-awareness . In the context of these theses, Eva-Maria Engelen criticizes the identification of the neurophysiological foundations of consciousness as insufficient to explain intentionality (see also the neural correlate of consciousness ).
