biography

Fuka was born on May 5, 1927 in Prague , Czechoslovakia . Her father František Podešva was a painter and her mother Marie a writer. Her grandfather was the founder of the Czech daily Lidové noviny .

In 1942 she attended the state-recognized College of Graphics in Prague under Professor Rudolf Skopec and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1945 to 1950. In 1950 she married her artist colleague Vladimír Fuka and gave birth to their only child, daughter Ivana, in 1951.

In 1967 she and her family fled to the USA. After her first husband died of diabetes in 1977, he married David H. Engle in 1986.

Fuka is one of the founding figures of Czech photography. Her works of art are characterized by special effects between light and shadow, which she achieved with the help of the environment. Her work as a photographer began in 1939 when her father gave her a Leica . Later, in 1951, she and her husband became friends with some intellectuals such as Jiří Kolář , Jan Hanč , Kamil Lhoták, Jan Rychlík , Zdeněk Urbánek and Josef Schwarz .

In 1963 she published a monograph. With photography still struggling to gain recognition in the art world in the early 1960s, this was an important step in her work as a female photographer and artist. After Fuka had two major exhibitions in 1996 and 2007, a second monograph by Torst was published in 2007.

Fuka died on November 25, 2015 at the age of 88.
