Evaldo Cabral de Mello

Evaldo Cabral de Mello (born January 22, 1936 in Recife , Pernambuco ) is a Brazilian historian , diplomat and author.

Life

Mello is a brother of the poet João Cabral de Melo Neto and cousin of the sociologist Gilberto Freyre and the poet Manuel Bandeira . He studied history and philosophy in Madrid and London. In 1960 he joined the Instituto Rio Branco and was appointed ambassador in the USA, Spain, France, Switzerland, Portugal and Trinidad and Tobago from 1962 until his retirement.

In 1975 his first historical work on the northeast (Nordeste) Olinda restaurada was published , which was followed by other works and numerous papers in specialist journals such as the Revista do Instituto Arqueológico, Histórico e Geográfico Pernambucano . In 1992 he was honored with a special doctorate from the Universidade de São Paulo . Thematically, he deals with the Portuguese colonial history of Brazil, revolutions in Brazil and the history of Pernambuco, especially with Dutch Brazil .

His main work is his O negócio do Brasil ( The Brazilian Business ), published in 2011 , in which he refutes the previous assumption that the expulsion of the Dutch in northeastern Brazil, especially in Pernambuco in the 17th century, was a purely military victory.

Awards

Mello has been the holder of the Grand Cross of the National Order for Scientific Merit since 1992 (Grã-Cruz da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico). On October 23, 2014, he was elected a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras to succeed João Ubaldo Ribeiro on chair 34.
