biography

Evan Roth received a degree in architecture from the University of Maryland and an MFA from Parsons The New School for Design, where he graduated as a class validator. During his time at Parsons, he developed several projects. Roth was named one of the top ten most interesting graduates of 2006.

After graduating, Roth worked at the Eyebeam OpenLab, an open source laboratory for creative technologies for the public , from 2005 to 2006 as a Research and Development Fellow and from 2006 to 2007 as a Senior Fellow. Roth's work with graffiti , open source technology, and public space led him to found the Graffiti Research Lab ("GRL") with James Powderly in 2005. The GRL projects include “LED Throwies” and “LASER Tag”. In 2007 Roth co-founded the Free Art and Technology Lab (FAT Lab), an internet-based art and technology collective dedicated to the interface between open source hacking and popular culture. He worked under the pseudonym fi5e.

His art

His work includes videos, sculptures and works on paper as well as purely web-based projects. In his works, Evan Roth shows the most varied of processes that occur when surfing the net and using a smartphone .

He explores the relationship between abuse and empowerment and the effect that the philosophies of hacking communities can have when carried over to digital and non-digital systems. He follows the movements of our fingers on the screen of the smartphone , searches the internet for ghosts or creates sculptures whose shapes were generated from the movements of graffiti artists. Aware that the extremely fast exchange of information on the Internet represents a new historical experience, Roth creates a work that is easy to understand and can be perceived in at least three temporalities: online, in a gallery and within a historical context.
