history

The first Protestant congregation in Hungary was founded in Ödenburg / Sopron in 1565. Their church was named after the Archangel Michael . It was destroyed in the great city fire in 1676. Afterwards, the services took place in the city palace of Princess Anna Maria zu Eggenberg and in a wooden church before a stone church was completed in 1724.

Construction and equipment

The church that exists today was built in the years 1782/83 in late baroque - classicist forms. 80 years later, the 52 meter high tower with an octagonal lantern was added in a round arch style . The baroque, gilded wood carved altar with rich figures (God the Father, Archangel Michael, apostles, putti) comes from the Kahlenberg monastery near Vienna. The altarpiece shows Christ on the Mount of Olives . In 1884 the organ was installed.

The church interior is divided into three naves by eight columns . Two galleries are built into the side aisles . The rectangular building is 36 meters long and 24 meters wide. The church has 2500 seats.
