Evangelical Church in Babstadt

The Evangelical Church in Babstadt , a district of Bad Rappenau in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg , goes back to a chapel mentioned in the late 15th century, which was first expanded into a church in the 18th century and then converted to Baroque style and in 1908/09 its present form was rebuilt.

history

In 1496 a Ulrichskapelle was mentioned in Babstadt, which was a branch chapel of the church in Obergimpern . The rider colonel Adolf von Kimming, who had acquired the place in 1711, had the manor house and outbuildings renewed there from 1712 and the chapel in the vicinity of the manor house expanded into a church. After the barons of Gemmingen owned Babstadt from 1732, Friedrich von Gemmingen (1691–1738) had the church rebuilt in 1738 in the Baroque style. In 1908/09, the dilapidated church was extensively renovated, which gave it its current appearance.

Bells

There are only fragmentary references to the early bells of the church in Babstadt. A large bronze bell, cast in 1778, shattered in 1842 and was then cast at the Bachert bell foundry in Dallau . There was also a smaller Concordia bell, which was also cast by Bachert in Dallau in 1831. On the occasion of the church renovation in 1908/09, Baron Fritz von Gemmingen-Hornberg donated three new bronze bells to the community. These were cast by Johann Heinrich Kurtz in Stuttgart, had the beats g sharp ', b' and dis '', a diameter of 62 to 94 cm and weights of around 150 to 520 kg. The bells bore inscriptions and the coat of arms of the barons of Gemmingen-Hornberg . The two smaller bells had to be delivered in 1917 for armament purposes. In 1925 the widow and son of Fritz von Gemmingen and the barons Ernst , Karl and Ferdinand von Gemmingen donated replacement bells, which were also cast at Kurtz in Stuttgart based on the samples received from the delivered bells. During the Second World War, the two largest of the existing bells had to be delivered in 1942, so that initially only the small bell from 1925 remained. It has the strike tone es '', a diameter of 61.5 cm and a weight of 140 kg. Their inscription reads: JAUCHZET GOD WITH A MERRY SOUND. GIVEN BY THE BARON ERNST, CARL AND FERDINAND VON GEMMINGEN , it bears the foundry mark of Heinrich Kurtz from 1925, a frieze and the Gemmingen coat of arms. In 1951, the community expanded the bells to include a bronze bell cast by Bachert in Kochendorf ( Bad Friedrichshall ) with the strike tone c '', a diameter of 80.5 cm and a weight of 313 kg. In 1955, another bell from Bachert in Kochendorf followed to complete the three-bell ringer with the striking note b ', a diameter of 91 cm and a weight of 462 kg. The bell has been operated electrically since 1970.
