The Evangelical Church in Schwanheim

The Evangelical Church of Schwanheim is a church in Bensheim - Schwanheim, built in 1821 in the classical style . The twin-towered church is under monument protection standing cultural monument and landmark of Schwanheim.

Location and history

The church is located at Rohrheimer Straße 34 in Schwanheim, which has been a district of Bensheim since 1971. The location used to be at the south-eastern entrance to Schwanheim. Due to the new building area in the south, the location has now become significantly more central.

The origins of the church go back to 1411. The first documented mention of a parish in Schwanheim dates back to this year. A church building was also erected in 1448 at the latest. This building was replaced from 1618 to 1620 by a new building designed by Jakob Wustmann. The church was not consecrated until 1687. Wustmann is also the builder of the Darmstadt Castle Church. The building became too small for the parish towards the end of the 18th century. The first plans for expansion were made by master builder Spieß, but they were never implemented. Instead, a new building was built from 1819 to 1821 according to plans by Darmstadt's building director Georg Moller . Georg August Lerch from Darmstadt was in charge of construction.

The interior was renovated in 1839. The originally simple classicist tent roofs of the towers were replaced by tall pointed helmets in 1877 at the request of the community . The Frankfurt painter Karl Lanz decorated the interior of the church in 1907 with Art Nouveau painting, which was removed again during a further renovation in 1962/63. The last restoration from 1993/94 restored the original condition.

construction

The church is completely plastered with white plaster. The floor plan is rectangular, with a block-like entrance front in front of it. The nave is flanked by narrow side rooms. The chancel is integrated into the ship.

The organ was built by Heinrich Keller in 1863. The original pews were replaced and destroyed in 1963. Two memorials for those who died in the two world wars are in front of the church. The last one was built in 1956.
